How Limiting Beliefs Make Us Lose Precious Time?

Time is one of the most valuable resources we have!
Unlike money, energy or even opportunities, time is the one thing we cannot earn back once it is gone.

Yet, many of us unintentionally waste years of our lives because of limiting beliefs, the stories we tell ourselves about what we can or cannot do. The constant internal self-talk about what is possible or not possible can quietly shape the course of our lives. As a professional coach, I see this pattern often. People arrive with dreams or strong ambitions, yet somewhere in their journey they get stuck. The obstacle is rarely about skills or intelligence. More often, it is the inner voice whispering:
“I am not ready.”
“I do not belong.”
“What if I fail?”
“Others are better than me.”
“All the good ones are already taken”
These thoughts may sound harmless, but they shape the decisions we make. They delay action, prevent us from speaking up or keep us in jobs, relationships or routines that no longer serve us.
The Hidden Cost of Self-Sabotage
Every time we let limiting beliefs take control, we are practicing a subtle form of self-sabotage. We might think we are keeping ourselves safe, but in reality, we are:
Delaying growth by postponing the steps we know we should take.
Missing opportunities because we hesitate or overthink.
Settling for less than we deserve in our career or personal life.
Over months and years, these small moments accumulate. One day we wake up and realise that precious time has slipped away, time we could have invested in advancing, creating or living fully.
Over time, people with limiting beliefs often become experts at finding excuses, blaming circumstances or others and justifying inaction.
How People Hold Themselves Back
Limiting beliefs show up in many forms. Here are just a few examples of how people sabotage their own dreams:
Someone who once dreamed of becoming an artist, but convinced themselves they are “not talented enough,” and now only paints in for themself or avoid visibility.
A young person passionate about sports, who gives up too early because they believe only “extraordinary athletes” can succeed.
Someone fascinated by performance, who wanted to be a magician or entertainer, but listened to voices saying it is “not a real career.”
Professionals who remain in a corporate position that is draining or even toxic, yet stay because they believe “all companies are the same” or that “it is too late to start over.”
Entrepreneurs at heart who long to start their own business, but hold back for years because of the belief that they are “not ready” or “not capable enough.”
People who dream of moving to a new country or exploring a different lifestyle, but stay where they are because they fear the unknown.
These stories are not about lacking ability. They are about believing a narrative that keeps people safe but small. And with every year that passes, more time is lost.
Final Thought
If you recognise yourself in these words, pause and reflect: How much time am I willing to lose to the beliefs that keep me small?
The truth is, life will not wait. Limiting beliefs may keep us comfortable in the short term, but in the long term, they cost us opportunities, fulfillments and precious years.
At Compass Coaching, I support individuals, professionals, artists, athletes and leaders who are ready to uncover and face the hidden beliefs that hold them back, build an unstoppable mindset and step into their true potential with clarity and courage.
Do not hesitate to reach out.
Warmest, Celine Foelmli
